“The second-most intriguing sweet wine in the world.” (Decanter Magazin, 2017)
Vintage: 2013 started with a long cold winter and later snows which slowed the flowering. The hot, dry summer was followed by a cool and rainy autumn. These constraining factors all contributed to an extremely balanced vintage that gave concentrated wines with lively acidity, excellent balance and good aging potential. The aszú harvest lasted from mid-October to the end of November and Szepsy Winery managed to harvest enough outstanding quality aszú berries. The sweet wines have an abundance of fruit, dynamism and impeccable flavours.
Wine: Bunches with an equal amount of shrivelled and healthy grapes with aszú berries were harvested from the whole Szepsy estate (Mád, Tállya, Rátka, Bodrogkeresztúr, Tokaj, Tarcal) for this Szamorodni which embodies perfect balance.
Winemaking: The making of Szamorodni is one of the most natural and easily loveable processes in the world of sweet wines. As a result, the sweetness does not cover the clearly perceptible minerality but rather enhances it. Szamorodni is the oldest Tokaji wine type. Its character is provided by the clay-mineral, zeolite rhyolite and a warm humid climate. It is enjoyable to drink due to the quantity and spectrum of minerals. It can develop for a long time in the bottle; its tannins smoothen, its fruitiness is exceptional. The 2013 Szepsy Szamorodni is made from 70% aszú-containing Furmint and 30% shrivelled Hárslevelű and was aged in a 200-l new Zemplén oak barrel for two and a half years.
