Szepsy Aszú 2011
It rose to fame: the doyen of the Great Tokaji Wine Auction in 2017. Frenetic.
“A very small quantity was produced in this vintage as the great heat and summer dryness hindered the development of aszú berries. But the small quantity which we managed to pick was exceptionally rich with perfect botrytisation. The aroma of the wine is deep and charming, bursting with subtly rich fruitiness. The apricot and orange blossom together give the main aroma. Unctuous in flavour, very youthful, perceptible, almost dynamic acidity appears, set on very refined, almost soft texture. Apricot, honey and intensive spiciness. Length and persistence of flavour mean it seems never to end. It provides a frenetic experience.” (Gabriella Mészáros)
Vintage: 2011 was a hot and dry year, a promising vintage in which spring arrived incredibly early. Flowering started in Szent Tamás Vineyard on 26 May, ripening on 25 July. The hot and dry period lasted right up to the end of August, early September. Apart from lighter summer showers the necessary precipitation only arrived in late autumn. Consequently, the harvest of the aszú berries started on 25 October and lasted until 30 November. A person was able to harvest an average of 6 kg a day of aszú berries. This harvest brough a small quantity but outstandingly concentrated aszú berries
Winemaking: The 100% Furmint base wine was harvested in Szent Tamás Vineyard at 28 Brix% and fermented to 12% vol. Individually picked aszú berries from Király, Betsek and Szent Tamás vineyards were added. After 72 hours maceration, gentle opening and then pressing the alcohol dropped to 7% and then stopped by itself at 12% at 11 °C.
